Potential Government Shutdown: What You Need to Know

Tomorrow, March 1, 2024 marks the first of two deadlines contained in the current Continuing Resolution (CR) which funds the federal government.

If Congress cannot agree on a spending deal by midnight, we’ll face a partial shutdown that could turn into a complete shutdown if an agreement isn’t reached by March 8, when the second deadline expires. During a shutdown, services like the processing of grants and loans will likely be delayed, as many non-essential government employees are sent home without pay.

This afternoon, the House of Representatives is set to vote on a short-term stopgap bill that would extend the deadlines to March 8 and March 22, respectively, and would give Congress time to finish the appropriations process. If passed, the bill will go to the Senate this evening before being sent to President Biden to sign into law.

We are closely tracking the developments in Congress and suggest that you do as well, as this will likely impact USDA, Treasury, and SBA programs that many of our members participate in.
