Commercial Rent Relief
Commercial rent remains a problem – for both businesses and the small landlords who are at risk of losing their buildings because they can’t pay their mortgages when tenants can’t pay their rents. This is an issue that CAMEO raised at our Advocacy Day.
Last week, Governor Newsom extended the Commercial Eviction Moratorium to September 30, 2021. The moratorium applies to commercial tenants, subtenants, and month-to-month or holdover tenants who are registered to do business in the state of California; have gross receipts at or below $25 million; and have missed a rent payment from March 16, 2020 to September 30, 2021.
The moratorium gives small business owners some breathing room, but a real solution is needed.
This week, the LA County Board of Supervisors is working on a solution and voted 5-0 to begin exploring the establishment of a commercial rent relief initiative, while also voting to identify $10 million to start the program.
This was made possible thanks to pressure from community organizations, including CAMEO members Inclusive Action for the City, Asian Pacific Islander Small Business Program, and Vermont-Slausen EDC.
CAMEO Is Hiring!
Do you visit your local bookstore more than Barnes and Noble? Do you support local economies driven by local small business owners? If so, we are looking for a temporary Marketing Specialist that can help us spread the word about the great work our network does. This position has the possibility of turning into a permanent part-time position.
Interested candidates should provide a digital cover letter, resume, a writing sample, and an example of your social media skills to cameo@CAMEOnetwork.org.
