The National Consumer Law Center is hiring a California Policy Director. Location: Hybrid (California).

The National Consumer Law Center (NCLC) is seeking a talented attorney to work as our first California Project Director. This important role will increase the reach and impact of NCLC’s advocacy work in California by providing legal technical assistance, training, and other support to California advocates. 

The California Project Director will be expected to deepen NCLC’s relationships across the state with legal services providers, members of the private bar, legislators,as well as assist in cultivating relationships with funders and donors. This is an exciting opportunity to build out a national advocacy group’s California work and presence as well as develop a new model for NCLC’s potential future work at the state level. Americans for Financial Reform Education Fund is hiring an Associate Director of Consumer Policy. Location: Remote or Hybrid (DC Metropolitan Area).

The Associate Director in collaboration with AFREF staff and coalition partners will develop policies and strategies to fight consumer financial abuses and seek more equitable alternatives, advocate for the long-term survival of an effective Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, provide leadership and support for a nationwide consumer coalition, and connect consumer financial justice issues to still broader economic and racial justice and corporate accountability projects.  Issues in their portfolio will include junk fees, lending discrimination, debt collection, auto lending, forced arbitration, predatory loans, student debt and more.

The Associate Director will research and write materials exploring and explaining issues for a variety of audiences; analyze, respond to, and formulate regulatory and legislative policy proposals; and work with AFREF leadership, staff, and diverse coalition partners to develop a policy agenda for change and create and drive strategies to advance it.

The Department of Financial Protection and Innovation (DFPI) is hiring three Senior Counsel, Legal Division. Location: Sacramento, San Francisco, Los Angeles, or San Diego.

Under the general direction of the Assistant Chief Counsel of the Legal Division, the Attorney III will draft regulations to enhance consumer protections and encourage positive financial innovation, provide legal opinions, analyze pending legislation, and work on other related tasks to support the DFPI’s regulatory responsibilities. Depending upon business needs, the attorney may join a team of more senior attorneys responsible for implementing the Digital Financial Assets Law and may focus initially on implementation of that law.

The attorney will promulgate regulations to implement legislation pursuant to the California Administrative Procedure Act rulemaking process. The attorney will analyze current legal developments and industry practices for purposes of drafting regulations; initiate or lead projects that involve analysis of legal, economic, regulatory, and social trends that may result in changes in the policies and interpretations of the Commissioner; initiate or lead special projects to implement Department laws and policies; consult with industry and public interest representatives and other state, local, and national agencies to formulate new regulations; and work with third-party vendors to perform studies to justify rulemaking decisions. The attorney will lead or participate in internal task forces formed to implement new laws and serve as a subject matter expert and main point of contact and liaison to other state and federal agencies.
