The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is proposing significant changes to longstanding immigration policy that substantially expands the meaning and application of the “public charge” provision. Currently, people considered likely to become a “public charge” can be denied admission to the U.S. or permanent residency status, or may even be deported. Homeland Security is now proposing to radically expand the list of benefit programs that would be considered in determining if someone is likely to become a public charge–including programs for healthcare, housing, food assistance and other programs that help participants meet their basic needs and live a fulfilling life.At East Bay Asian Local Development Corporation, we fiercely oppose the proposed changes to the “public charge” provisions. Immigrants are at the core of our communities in every way, as friends, family members, neighbors, and partners. They are us. Immigrants built this country, and make valuable contributions to our communities every day. We find the proposed changes to our immigration law to be morally reprehensible and contrary to the founding spirit of America. If implemented, these proposals will harm families and put them at risk of traumatic separation. These changes will increase the cost of government, reduce the stability of our neighborhoods, harm families, decrease safety and reduce the tax base.We urge you to take immediate action and stand with us to protect our immigrant communities.
