Note: The legal clinic has now ended, and we know not everybody received benefits nor had the same experiences while applying. We would like your feedback about the clinic and the PUA program. Please fill out this survey to let us know how it went for you.
If you are still in need of assistance, one of Legal Aid At Work’s other clinics and helplines might be able to help.
As part of the federal CARES Act, PUA was established to help business owners, self-employed workers, independent contractors, and others with a limited work history who may not be eligible for other forms of unemployment insurance.
However, applying for and receiving assistance through PUA can be hard for many workers who have limited experience navigating government programs and infrastructure, or whose English proficiency level may be a barrier to access.
CAMEO has partnered with Renaissance Entrepreneurship Center and Legal Aid At Work, with support from the Arthur and Charlotte Zitrin Foundation. They set up a legal clinic to help self-employed workers in the state of California determine if they’re eligible for PUA and guide them through the application process.
To participate in this clinic, call (415) 484-8372 or fill out the online form. A volunteer will ask you a few questions in order to set up an appointment for you with a Legal Aid At Work counselor.
