- Federal Update: SOTU, SBA and Budget
- Member Spotlights
- The Goodies: This week’s highlight is the Small Business Survey by Small Business California. This survey takes ‘the pulse’ of our small businesses. These vital results are shared with policy makers and elected officials from Sacramento to Washington DC. Please distribute this to your network of small business owners.
Federal Update: SOTU, SBA and Budget
With the President’s State of the Union speech and leadership announcements at the SBA, I figured it was time for a federal update.
Working backwards with the SOTU on Tuesday: President Obama says he wants to grow the economy from the middle class and not from the top down. We definitely agree, but we didn’t hear the words we needed to hear as proponents of micro-business. He neglected to emphasize the role of start-up and small businesses. Also lacking was recognition that self-employment and very small businesses equal job creation. You can read our full statement on the 2013 SOTU.
In case you haven’t heard… on Monday, Karen Mills, the administrator for the SBA turned in her resignation. That comes on the heels of an announcement by Marie Johns that she’ll be leaving in May. We hope that new leadership will champion the needs of the 88% of businesses that are micro. CAMEO also weighed in on the SBA resignations.
The full year FY2013 budget will be the main topic of conversation for the rest of the month. Keep your fingers crossed, start praying, do whatever it is that you do to send cooperation vibes to Congress.
We’re celebrating Valentine’s Day by sending our love to you for the good work you do. In doing so, we extend a warm welcome to new members for 2013. We look forward to working with you to strengthen the micro-business sector.
