Micro Enterprise Home Kitchen Webinars

Last year, CAMEO and nearly 100 other organizations mobilized thousands of people in support of the Homemade Food Operations Act (AB 626), which legalizes home restaurants and passed unanimously in September. It is the first law of its kind in the nation, and a great victory for home cooks – mostly women, immigrants, and people of color – who can now use their skills to generate income.

Though our advocacy efforts paid off, there is still work to be done. In order to go into effect, AB 626 requires buy-in from counties and cities. So far, Riverside County is the only county that has opted in and started issuing permits in June. As written, the law creates confusion over who is in charge of oversight and responsible for handling permits and inspections. That is why an amendment was introduced this year, AB 377, to create more clarity around public health requirements and how counties (and 4 cities) can opt in to this opportunity.

Currently, AB 377 is making its way through Committee, and you can contact your Senators to ask them to support the bill. In the meantime, CAMEO member COOK Alliance – who is leading the charge on behalf of home cooks – is providing training to home kitchen entrepreneurs and small business organizations to cover everything from rules and requirements to the limitations of this new food permit.
